We are excited to welcome The Washington Post Summer 2023 Engineering and Business Operations intern class. Over 35 exceptionally talented students from 25 colleges and universities have joined our offices for the summer, embodying a diverse range of academic fields, including Engineering, Finance, Marketing, and Advertising. Our interns engage in impactful projects and the work completed during our internship program supports the present and future initiatives of The Post.

Pann Sripitak

Sawasdee krub! My name is Pann (pronounced “pun” like the joke, courtesy of my parents’ sense of humor) and I’m excited to be joining the Site Engineering team this summer. I was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand, and I’m currently a sophomore at Stanford University, where I’m pursuing a degree in Computer Science with a minor in Ethics and Technology. Last summer, I gained experience as a software engineering intern at Agoda.

Outside of work and school, I love playing the guitar and soccer is a big part of my life – I’m a die-hard supporter of Manchester United. I also love movies and I’ve re-watched Interstellar a staggering seven times (once for my own viewing, four times to show it off to my friends, and twice as a part of research for my academic essay on the film)!

Sam Shi

News Engineering &amp; Publishing Tool Team

Hey! I’m Sam Shi and I’m graduating from Indiana University in May. I hail from a sheltered suburb north of Indianapolis, but I’ve grown to love exploring the world around us, whether it’s Ireland, Singapore, or California. I’m super excited to move to the East Coast where I’ll be able to snack on countless oysters and experience a truly urban lifestyle. I love art, from producing and listening to music, to creating visual art, to exploring art museums. I’ve interned at several tech startups as an engineer, and I’ve worked at the student newspaper, coding digital designs for stories and most notably, elections-focused projects such as a live elections data dashboard for the 2022 midterms. I look forward to learning lots and meeting new people at The Post!

Aisha Adebisi

Hi, my name is Aisha Adebisi. I am from Miami, but I currently reside in Houston. I will be graduating with my BBA in Accounting in May 2023 at the University of Houston. I also will be continuing my education there to get my master’s degree, so that I can take the CPA exam. My love for accounting stems from my love for numbers and helping people. I was drawn to The Post because I have only interned at PwC and I would like to experience what it’s like to work in industry as well. This internship will give me the opportunity to see another side of accounting.

Some fun facts about me are that I am Nigerian and I love to travel. I went to Dubai last year and I am going to Greece this year. My last fun fact is I love fashion and I enjoy creating outfits.

Jieshuai (Christian) Zhu

Financial Accounting &amp; Reporting Team

Hi there! I’m graduating in the summer of 2024 from the University of Virginia, and I grew up in two of Asia’s most brilliant cities - Shanghai and Singapore. I pursued a double major in commerce, finance and accounting concentration, and computer science. I used to be a student journalist in Singapore’s largest Chinese mainstream media - Lianhe Zaobao, and I feel so grateful that I found my place in the media industry again. I hope to hone my financial accounting skills here to be a good accountant and dream to pursue a CPA certificate. Having lived in South-East Asia for nearly a decade, I would love cooking with authentic Thai species as they always offer a unique smell different from any part of the world. Outside my work time, I enjoy hiking and exploring national parks, as well as visiting museums to enrich my experiences.

Anjali Singh

Hi! My name is Anjali and I’m a student at the University of Washington, Seattle, majoring in computer science. I’ve been involved in student journalism for several years, so I’m stoked to be able to work for a company that allows me to bridge these interests. My main passion in life has always been to help people and leave an impact on the world with any work I do, and I aim to uphold that both with my time at The Post and after college. I’m dedicated to applying computing to intersecting fields that I’m interested in like healthcare and education, and have worked extensively in outreach to expose and inspire the younger generation to the world of technology. A dream of mine is to see the Northern Lights!

Anna Hurd

Hi everyone! My name is Anna Hurd (she/her/hers), and I am a rising junior at Brown University. I call home New York, but I have bounced around between NY, CT, MA, and RI since high school. At Brown, I study computer science; I also play on the ice hockey team and have recently joined the squash team. My biggest dream involves coding, writing, and traveling. I have an affinity for baby bok choy with rice and shrimp, and lettuce wraps with scrambled eggs and cilantro. I definitely identify as a coffee addict. The goofiest thing I’ve ever done is try to go without coffee. I can’t wait to meet everyone and work with the team this summer!

Maria Michelle Whiting

I’m Michelle, an aspiring Certified Public Accountant. In my free time, I love writing and reading books, taking a stroll, and vlogging. Migrating to the US only recently, I formed a love for matcha lattes and sweet iced tea (surprisingly, “iced tea” is different in both countries). Growing up as Filipino-American, in the Philippines - my parents had high hopes for me. I finished my undergraduate degree in Accountancy from a prominent business school in Manila called De La Salle University, where I developed a love for taxation and general accountancy. By the time I finish my internship at The Post, I will also carry with me my master’s degree in business and finance. Although at the height of the pandemic, I lost a little bit of my path and became a freelancer in the e-commerce and creative field, I promised myself that this year will be filled with redirection. I am set on and back on track with my passion and I’m happy to start it with the right company, as an intern in the Tax department. I am extremely thankful for this opportunity!

Morgan Kinne

Hi, I’m Morgan Kinne (she/her) and I’ll be working with the Core Engineering team! I’m a rising senior studying Computer Science in the School of Engineering at UVA. I grew up in South Florida but I currently call Charlottesville my home. Some of my favorite things to do include reading, cooking, traveling, and making coffee (and swimming, but I’m a little far from the ocean at the moment). One of my current obsessions is R&amp;B / Soul music, and my favorite band is Thee Sacred Souls. I can’t wait to start this summer!

Erin Jeon

Hello, I’m Erin! I was born and raised in Southern California, and I’m currently a student at Northwestern University studying communication and economics. I’ve always had a love for journalism, having interned in the past with Girls’ Life magazine as an editorial intern. But it was through my experience doing influencer PR with a nonprofit back home that I found a passion for crafting strategies and messages for organizations. I can’t wait to do more of that as a marketing intern with The Post and Arc XP this summer. In my free time, you can find me discovering new bakeries and coffee shops. And a fun fact about me is that in the fifth grade, I invented a popcorn bucket that distributes butter evenly and received a provisional patent for it.

Risha Surana

Hi! I was born and raised in the Bay Area and I am now a rising junior at San Jose State University where I’m studying Computer Science and completing a minor in Political Science. Outside of my classes, I hold a leadership position as part of the Society of Women Engineers chapter at SJSU where I worked with a really fun team and helped host an engineering conference for local high school girls this year. I am also an almond croissant connoisseur and can be found baking bread at 4am to decompress. As a bit of an adrenaline junkie and nerd for all things music, some of my personal goals for the coming year include trying out whitewater rafting (I don’t know where and how, but it will happen) and going out to see a lot more live music! I’m really excited to be a part of The Post this summer and I’m looking forward to working with an incredible team!

Karen Wang

Hi! I’m a graduate student studying computer science and journalism at Columbia University. I’m passionate about making journalistic content more sustainable and have long-term value. And I want to achieve this by building applications and tools for both readers and reporters. So I’m very excited to work on news engineering at WaPo this summer!

I combine my computational skills and reporting background to work on data-driven investigative projects — previously at BuzzFeed News and McClatchy, and currently at Brown Institute for Media Innovation/MuckRock. I’m also proud of my work on improving LAist’s source tracking system to drive diversity and inclusion in local news. I’m also a visual person — talk to me about data viz!

When I’m not coding or reporting, I’m probably trying out new coffee beans or writing my coffee tasting guide :)

Cedric Prentice

Hi! I’m Cedric, and I’m very excited to be interning as a software engineer with the Arc XP page-builder team. Freedom of information is important to me, so I look forward to helping writers, editors, and fellow interns share their content in the best way possible. I’m from Takoma Park, and I currently study Computer Science at the University of Maryland. This past year, I worked as a Software Engineer for UMD’s engineering department, where I helped create a management system for the maker spaces on campus. I’ve been obsessed with cars and motorsport my entire life. I spent five summers throughout high school and college working as a mechanic, and I race cars in my free time. When I’m not programming, you can find me working on one of my cars, lifting weights, or running.

Sagar Gupta

My name is Sagar Gupta, and I’m a computer science major at Georgia Tech specializing in artificial intelligence and networks. I’ve always been drawn to writing—whether in the form of poetry or code. I spent the past few summers conducting bioinformatics research in various fields ranging from protein structure prediction to cancer diagnosis. When I need a break from wrangling with datasets and taming models, I turn to creative writing. My poetry journey (dating back to the first poem I ever wrote about ice cream and dragons in 4th grade) has been extremely rewarding—I will never stop bragging about Amanda Gorman complimenting one of my pieces. While not busy working, I can be found playing badminton, curating playlists, or scrolling through Instagram reels about cats. As a northern Virginia native, I’m beyond excited to return home this summer and navigate the intersection of storytelling and engineering at the Post!

Jahnavi Shah

Hi! My name is Jahnavi, and I am a graduate student at Cornell University. I was born and raised in a small town in western India. I did my bachelor’s in computer science and learned early on that I wanted to build products. Although I haven’t been closely involved in journalism, I have created content on LinkedIn and Instagram for over four years. I love writing and creating short-form videos. In my free time, I enjoy cooking and eating, especially Indian Food, and exploring new places. My dream is to travel the world and make memories for a lifetime. I am excited to enter the world of journalism and work on a product that is the backbone of telling stories and connecting the world.

Andrew Bempong

Hi! I’m Andrew Bempong and I’m a sophomore at Stanford University studying Computer Science—specifically Human-Computer Interaction. I’ve always deeply invested in understanding how humans engage with social institutions through technology, focusing on the realms of education, inclusion, and journalism. Growing up just outside of Washington, DC, I’ve been shaped by experience spearheading projects furthering digital journalism, education, and activism. Driven by a desire to continue the digital journalism/education I’ve contributed to through The Stanford Daily and Stanford Black in Computer Science respectively, I’m excited to bring a unique perspective with a strong commitment to social impact.

However, in my spare time, I love traveling, playing the guitar, and cooking (fun fact, I’m an expert at making Ghanaian Jollof stew!)

Sophie Addington

Hi there! I’m from Minneapolis, MN, but for the last four years San Diego has been home (a solid 8.5/10 lockdown location rating). This June, I will be graduating from the University of California, San Diego, where I’m majoring in Data Analytics and Political Science. I spend a lot of time writing blog posts for The Women’s Network, covering everything from the subconscious effects of gratitude journaling to the most iconic artworks from women in the 90s. I also serve as a mentor for undergraduate students, giving sporadic advice for life’s chaos. My love for empowering others and questionable tendency of talking to strangers is what led me to Agile Coaching. Spending most of college online has made me incredibly excited to join the Agile Team at The Post!! In my free time, I enjoy reading (Haruki Murakami has my heart), hackathons, and going to estate sales (yikes).

Natalie McCoy

Hey! My name is Natalie McCoy and I’m from Owensboro, Kentucky. I spent the bulk of my childhood exploring the wooded areas around my home and writing stories about the beings I imagined could have lived there. As I got older, I continued to write through my schools Journalism program and even published a novel. Around this time, I also began to discover a new passion for the world of tech. I began coding during my first semester at Sullivan University and haven’t looked back since. Last summer I completed an application for a K-8 school and I recently wrapped up a website for a sober living home that helps those struggling with addiction. When I’m not at the computer, you could probably find me hiking, horseback riding or learning a new song on the piano!

Ben Swedberg

Hey all! I’m Ben, and I’m a recent graduate of Northwestern University, where I studied political science and computer science and explored my interest in the law by pretending to be a lawyer on Northwestern’s mock trial team. Last summer I built plug-ins for a legacy content management system, so I’m excited to learn about the future of CMS at Arc XP. This past year I spent five months in Copenhagen developing a passion for good urban planning — which is partially what led me to DC. I just can’t wait until I’m able to hop on the Metro and easily bounce among all the city’s museums. These days, I spend most of my time doing jigsaw puzzles while listening to the new boygenius album, taking advantage of my local movie theater’s $5 Tuesday deal, and trying to beat my best time of 13:45 on the NYT Sunday crossword puzzle.
