Employee Profile

Carlos

I studied art, advertising and architectural design in my native country, Peru. For 12 years, I worked as a designer and political cartoonist with a daily newspaper.

When I came to the U.S., I studied at Montgomery College and received an associate’s degree in Graphic Design and Illustration. I currently work as an Art Director with El Tiemo Latino, designing layouts and organizing the Web site and blogs of the newspaper.

My typical day

At the beginning of the week, I plan and organize my weekly projects with the Managing Editor and the Editor in Chief. I work on designing the pages throughout the week until Thursday, when we send the newspaper to the printer.

Teamwork

One of the things I like the most about my job is collaborating with others. When everybody on the team is doing their part — running around and working together to meet a deadline — it’s invigorating and really satisfying.

Creativity and flexibility

The most rewarding part of my work is the flexibility I have to be creative. I’m free to elaborate, to come up with new ideas and to develop new designs. The people I work with are not only supportive of my creativity, they expect it.

Great people

I feel very comfortable working with El Tiempo Latino because many of my coworkers here are from different Latin American countries. I also work with Americans who have a different culture that adds a different perspective. It makes me very happy to work with all people from so many different parts of the world.
